(1) Where are you from and how would you like to be identified?
David Vedel from Oceanside, California
(2) Thinking back to your “day-1 self,” what is going through your mind at the start?
Nervous mostly. On the first day I was overwhelmed with lots of emotions [excitement, happiness, nervousness and others]. This is the reason why I didn't get any sleep the night before. And all these emotions went away after the first 5 miles. And actually anxiousness for #2. Anxious mostly. On the first day I was overwhelmed with lots of emotions [excitement, happiness, anxiousness and others]. This is the reason why I didn't get any sleep the night before. And all these emotions went away after the first 5 miles.
(3) Do you feel ready?
No. Well at least not physically ready. I was out of shape and the only "training" i did was walk my dog at the beach...then usually to a taproom to get pints
(4) What are you most afraid of?
I was most concerned with river crossings in the Sierras. I saw youtube videos of sketchy river crossings in the Sierras. But It was 2017, a really bad snow year for the Sierras.
(5) What are you most confident about?
My gear maby? idk i was pretty oblivious when i first started.
(6) Does anybody not want you to go?
My mom mentioned she didn't want me to go....but moms always been supportive no matter what i did, so she came around.
(7) What made you decide to take this hike?
I was intrigued by the Pacific Crest Trail ever since I learned about it, summer 2011. It's when I started hiking & going on overnight backpacking trips .Then sometime August 2017 I was just fed up with daily life. All I did was work a job I didn't like and go out drinking most nights of the week. The idea of hiking the PCT started creeping back into my head.
(8) What do you expect to get from it?
I wanted to impress myself again.
(9) Have you ever done anything like this before?
Nooo. I did a couple solo overnighters, like 7 years prior tho.
(10) What have you done to prepare?
Not much. I watched YouTube videos, Read Blogs, and walk my dog at the beach.
(11) What are you looking forward to the most?
Change. I wanted to see a change in my life, and in my reflection when I looked in the mirror. And challenge for #11. I wanted a challenge. And to see a change in my life, and in my reflection when I looked in the mirror.
(12) When/where did you leave the trail?
9/20/18 at Stevens Pass
(13) What caused you to leave the trail?
Honestly, it got too cold for me. I was hiking a lot in the rain [i was literally soaked for days], and each night I could feel the ground get colder and colder. You wouldn't see the sun for more than 20min a day, if that. Eventually I got to Stevens Pass with a cold, and I wasn't walking again till it passed. I also had a friends wedding in Spokane, Wa I wanted to go to. It was scheduled for 10/3/18, so I think I could've made it to Canada AND the wedding if the weather was good and I wasn't sick.
(14) Would you like to add anything else?
I'm gonna do it again. Just next time I'll start earlier and try to finish in august.
