Rift Zone

Rift Zone is a photographic exploration of the San Andreas Fault. Through a series of landscapes, portraits, details, and errata, I trace the entire length of the fault through California.

Plate tectonics is a relatively recent theory used to explain the earth’s crust. At its heart, the theory supposes that there are approximately 20 “plates” that comprise the earth’s surface. Where these plates touch one another there is friction, activity, creation, and destruction. Traversing 750 miles of Californian mountains, deserts, plains, beaches, and forests, this project is a celebration of a place, of a state of tension, and of geology as an experiential practice.
